Eats Shoots and Leaves by Lynne Truss
01. In The King’s English Kingsley Amis divides people into two categories: Berks and Wankers. Berk don’t know and don’t care about correct grammar and punctuation while wankers and sticklers and pedants.
02. Truss used to work on a BBC4 radio show called Cutting a Dash where they quiz people on punctuation and one night they were asking people if they punctuate their text messages. Everyone said yes. She tried to give people a way out, ‘But it’s a real fag–scrolling through those punctuation menus.’ One man said, ‘Of course I do–I did an A-level in English.’ Evidently, and A level in English is a sacred trust, like something out of Lord of the Rings . You must go forth with your A level and protect the English language with your [law?] of elfin gold.
