Interestingly, Richard Dawkins’ The God Delusion has sold 500,000*** copies in the U.S. and 300,000 copies in the U.K.

When I read of the popularity of Dawkins’ book, first I said: YAY! Because Dawkins’ is my man. Then I said: Wait a minute. The U.S. has a population of roughly 300 million and the U.K. has roughly 60.1 million. That’s one book per 600 people in the U.S. whereas in the U.K. it’s one book per 200 people. One must take into account overall reading habits from both populations–one quarter of British adults don’t read* in comparison to 38 percent in the U.S.** So the British will buy more books as a matter of course.

Still and all, they could be buying rubbish and they choose Dawkins. Either because they’re nontheists or because they’re willing to listen to what someone without their beliefs has to say. [And before anyone says that atheists need to listen to what theists have to say–I assure you, we have. We’ve been listening for the length of our conscious lives. Once you’ve listened to atheists, or really anyone with religious views utterly apposed to yours, for a couple or five decades then we’ll listen to you again. Deal?]

That the U.S. is the only truly free country still worshiping a fictional being is not news, but the numbers to show it are interesting. Most countries still ruled by religion try to control their people right down to their thought processes, what they can do with their bodies and who they date. Oh, wait…

Anyway, that’s the news and some thoughts from this heathen. And now here’s Jim–how’s the weather in the ninth circle of hell there, Jimbo?!

The Poe Murders is a graphic retelling of many of Edgar Allan Poe’s mystery and horror stories meshed into a single tale. The stories included in this graphic-novel are: The Cask of Amontillado, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Masque of the Red Death, The Purloined Letter, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Raven, as well as others. The graphic-novel will be told in the style of a mystery, in which the characters are searching for the mysterious source causing rational men and women to commit these horrific murders.

When it came to the attention of the TED folks that some pseudoscience was making its way into these talks, they issued this  letter, which is an excellent introduction to critical thinking. Last night I finished reading Spook by Mary Roach and it was a good time, particularly for the cynics out there. She, the perpetual skeptic, goes in search of scientific proof of past lives, ghosts and life after death, amongst other things. Her journey covers several continents and meetings with some of the most learned people in their respective fields, but rather than giving the reader answers she gives us the facts and lets us figure out what we believe on our own. Roach had me laughing out loud several times with her wry observations and self-depreciation and in the end I’m with her in thinking that the human mind has an enormous capacity to convince itself of whatever it wants to believe.

-001- p7: …the moment we label a person or a situation, we put on blinders to all evidence that contradicts our diagnosis.

Aversion to loss, on its own, is strong. But when it converges with commitment, the force becomes an even more powerful influence in shaping our thinking and decision making.

The way in which the scientists responded to Dubois in the nineteenth century is critical for us to understand, because it sheds light on the next force we’ll encounter. While a part of their dismissive reaction can be explained by their commitment to a previously held belief, there was also another force at play. Here’s where commitment merges with the sway of ‘value attribution’: our tendency to imbue someone or something with certain qualities based on perceived value, rather than on objective data.

Without realizing it, the commuters attributed the value they perceived—the baseball cap, the jeans, the subway venue—to the quality of the performance. As they passed by Bell, most subways riders didn’t even glance in his direction. Instead of hearing an outstanding concert, they heard street music.

This one word, ‘warm’ or ‘cold’–albeit irrelevant in the larger scheme of things—made students assign a high or low value to the professor. Like the NBA teams with the draft order, once the students read the substitutes bio, their opinions of him were set.
In other words, a single word has the power to alter our whole perception of another person—and pissibly sour the relationship before it even begins.
-020- pp76-7: ‘If you look across all industries,’ Huffcutt told us, ‘ this unstructured interview format is by far the most dominant form of applicant selection.’ …
‘Your typical unstructured interviewed’–the common ‘first-dat’ method–’just doesn’t do well. We have a long history of research confirming that.’
…there’s only a small correlation between first-date (unstructured) job interviewed and job performance.
…Well, the same thing happens in the interview. You’ve got a very limited time exposure, applicants put on their best show, managers put on their best show, and—not surprisingly—you just don’t see the realities of the person in twenty minutes.’
-021- p79: When they analyzed the results, MacDonald and Ross found that judgmental roommates and nosy parents really do know best—well, sort of. Roommates and parents were far better then students at predicting a relationship’s longevity. But, surprisingly…even when the students predicted their relationships would be long-lived, their assessments of the problems in their relationships were right on the money. The students weren’t blind to the issues that were already putting strains on the relationships; they simply ignored them…
-022- p79: This dismissal of the facts is the first of three types of mistakes, or traps, we all fall into when we diagnose.
-023- pp80-3: You’d expect professional managers selecting new employees to be more level-headed. As it turns out, however, Huffcutt explained, managers are especially prone to ignoring highly relevant information when it comes to hiring. While the infatuated students are blinded by optimism, hiring managers, according to Huffcutt, ‘just ask poor questions.’
The standard job interview questions are familiar to all of us. But they make Huffcutt cringe. …he shared a list of the top ten most commonly asked questions during an interview. … But of the whole list, Huffcutt gave a passing mark to only one question.
1. Why should I hire you?
2. What do you see yourself doing five years from now?
3. What do you consider to be your greatest strengths and weaknesses?
4. How would you describe yourself?
5. What collage subject did you like the best and the least?
6. What do you know about our company?
7. Why did you decide to seek a job with our company?
8. Why did you leave your last job?
9. What do you want to earn five years from now?
10. What do you really want to do in life?
Questions 1,3 and 4 doesn’t glean useful information about what the candidate would really be like on the job.
Question 3, about the candidate’s greatest strengths and weaknesses. ‘What do you really gain by asking that?’ Huffcutt pointed out, ‘Who’s going to tell you their true weaknesses?…’ Applicants developed a standard, pat answer. They’re going to say something that sounds good but doesn’t really portray a weakness: ‘Sometimes I take my work too seriously.’
Questions 2,9 and 10 requires candidates to gaze into the future. … applicants can be—shall we say—less than forthcoming about their true plans.
Questons 5, 7 and 8 … turns the interviewer into a historian.
And the winner is unassuming question 6. That can actually be a decent question that gets into whether they took the time to research your company, which can be a good sign—at least better than the previous questions.’
All the other top ten questions invite a performance by the candidate.
Although everyone…knows that these performance charades are going on, hiring manager are attracted to the first-date format, thinking that a good conversation will allow their instincts to guide them to the right candidate.
The reason managers can err so easily is that, in addition to ignoring objective data, they focus on and give too much credence to irrelevant factors, which is the second trap we all fall into when making a judgment.
-024- p86: When we conduct job interviews, said Huffcutt, ‘we often base the image of the ideal candidate on ourselves. Somebody comes in who’s similar to us, and we’re going to click; we’re probably going to want to hire them.’ But there’s no proof that just because potential employees are similar to their manager, they’ll be a better fit for the company. In fact, there’s a compelling case to be made that managers would be better off hiring someone unlike them—so that where the manager falls short, the new hire can pick up the slack.
-025- p86: …time and again we overestimate our ability to form an objective opinion.
-026- p87: When it comes to interviews, managers need to restrain themselves from delving into first-date questions and focus instead on specific past experience and ‘job-related hypothetical scenarios’. It’s the Joe Friday, just-the-facts-ma’am approach. The idea is to focus on relevant data and squelch any questions that invite the candidate to predict the future, reconstruct the past, or ponder life’s big questions. … What kind of accounting software are you familiar with? What experience do you have running PR campaigns? How would you reduce inefficiencies on the assembly line?
…structured interviews fare much better than their unstructured counterparts. ‘Joe Friday’ interviews are six times more effective than first-date interviews at predicting a candidate’s job performance.
…even then interviews aren’t that great because some people simply know how to sell themselves better than others. As counterintuitive as it sounds you don’t need interviews at all. Research shows that an aptitude test predicts performance just as well as a structured interview.
-027- p88: The point is, when we’re in the position to make a diagnosis, we all become overly confident in our predictive abilities and overly optimistic about the future. Like the students in rocky relationships who believed love would prevail, we often ignore all all evidence that contradicts what we want to believe.
…When we asked him whether his own department had made any changes in its hiring procedures based on his research, Huffcutt smiled. ‘That’s a great question,’ he said, ‘and the answers is no. I’ve made some suggestions on how we can do better on interviews, but so far they haven’t been taken.’
-028- p92: [In pre-World War II Germany] There a psychiatrist named Emil Kraepelin was developing the first categorization scheme for mental disorders. Instead of relying on objective, scientific data, Kraepelin used his own intuitive judgment to arrive at the diagnostic scheme. Some of the labels he developed are still used today, including manic-depressive disorder, also known as bipolar disorder. Some of his other diagnoses, however, are more obscure and, frankly, unnerving—such as his category of ‘individuals with distinctly hysterical traits,’ which included ‘dreamers and poets, swindlers and Jews.’
-029- pp93-4: Now, the bipolar designation was arbitrary for a few reasons: Kraepelin had relied on his own perceptions, rather than on hard science, when categorising the mental disorders; the DSM-III broadened his original definition in 1980; and pharmaceutical marketing campaigns since then had attempted to bring more people into the fold. Primed to be on the lookout for bipolar disorder, psychiatrists started seeing it everywhere they looked. What many of them failed to recognise was that they had fallen into one of the traps of the diagnosis bias—arbitrarily assigning labels.
…this inclination is further complicated by the other trap of diagnosis: our tendency to ignore objective data that contradicts our initial diagnosis. … Dr Wampold is the kind of man who believes in empirical, quantitative evidence and objective data.
-030- pp95-7: Wampold’s findings showed that there were three distinct elements that made a psychotherapist successful. The first was talent. Some therapists are more skilled than others. The second element Wampold identified is what’s called ‘therapeutic alliance’–the quality of the relationship the practitioner formed with the client. Therapists who had good relationships with their clients tended to have more positive results than those who didn’t. The third factor was whether the studies allowed the therapists to use the method of therapy with which they felt most comfortable.
Surprisingly, diagnosis didn’t figure into the equation one way or the other. [Wampold] : ‘diagnosis is irrelevant; it doesn’t matter what the diagnosis is… The whole notion of certain treatments for specific disorders falls apart.’ This is, ‘it’s not the particular treatment that’s making the difference; it’s the ability of the therapist to work with the patient, creating a collaborative bond.’
Wampold is not claiming that psychotherapy isn’t effective. His meta-analysis actually found that it had very positive mental health effects… the diagnostic model doesn’t have any therapeutic advantage in and of itself.
-031- pp96-100: In 2002 47 randomized placebo controlled short-term efficacy trials…all the data meticulously analyzed, SSRIs were no more clinically effective than placebos in making patients feel better. Sugar pills and Prozac had about the same therapeutic effect.
…When it comes to SSRIs and Children, only three out of the sixteen randomized control trials they had for kids showed a positive result. And of course there is also the risk of serious side effects.
…Wampold’s study was published in 1997, psychiatrists nevertheless kept diagnosing and prescribing.
But there’s another aspect to diagnosis we have yet to explore—its effects on the person being diagnosed.
…the third and most surprising trap of diagnosis, let’s head to Israel, where 105 soldiers were about to participate in a grueling fifteen-week commander training program. It was a rigorous and intense process, requiring harsh physical training, mental concentration, and sixteen-hour workdays.
The would-be commanders didn’t know it, but this particular course was going to be different from any to date. Before this session’s classes started, psychologist Dov Eden informed the training officers leading the programme that the army had accumulated comprehensive data on each of the trainees, including, Eden explained, ‘psychological test scores, sociometric data from the previous course, and ratings by previous commanders.’
Based on this comprehensive information, Eden told the officers, each soldier had been classified into one of three ‘command potential’ (CP) categories: ‘high’, ‘regular,’ and ‘unknown’ (due to insufficient information). Trainees from each classification were divided equally into the four trainee classes. [They were told to memorize each person's predicted CP by the beginning of the course.'
The trainees had no idea that any of this was going on. And the officers didn't know that the so-called command potential, along with all the supporting data, was completely bogus. Scores were randomly assigned to the trainees and had nothing to do with their intelligence, past performance, or ability.
When Eden returned fifteen weeks later, he discovered something remarkable. At the end of the course, the soldiers took a paper-and-pencil test that measured their new knowledge of 'combat tactics, topography, standard operating procedures, and such practical skills as navigation and accuracy of weapon firing.' This test wasn't rigged; it was part of normal procedure, a standardized assessment all soldiers took at the end of their training. But this is where the effects of assigning soldiers to the different command potential categories became apparent. The soldiers whom the training officers thought had a high CP score performed much better on the test than their “unknown” and “regular” counterparts. Simply being labelled, however arbitrarily, as having high leadership potential translated directly into actual improved ability... Remember, neither the trainers nor the trainees had any idea what was going on. Without realizing it, the trainees had taken on the characteristics of the diagnoses ascribed to them.
A meta-analysis conducted by psychologists at SUNY Albany suggested that these same diagnostic effects operate in the workplace. If you've even been fortunate enough to work for a boss who values and believes in you, you'll know that you tend to rise to meet the high expectations set for you. On the other hand, there's nothing that will make you feel more incompetent and demoralized than a supervisor who is convinced you don't have what it takes.
The same phenomenon can occur when a psychologist or psychiatrist assigns a label to a client, be it bipolar disorder, anxiety, or depression. As Wampold explained, one of the problems ingerent in diagnoses is that 'there's pressure to make everything fit with that diagnosis, so once that diagnosis has been made, all the behaviours and decisions become confirmatory.' When a child who has been branded as bipolar appears 'tearful' or feels 'sad and empty,' these emotions get interpreted as part of the condition. When we are labelled, explained psychologist Franz Epting, 'it's easy to start acting it out as a way of being in the world.' We fit into the mold created by the diagnosis. 'And then it becomes quite a tangle between what's really going on with us versus what we have been labelled with.'
...this molding process becomes self-perpetuating.
And this is the third trap of diagnosis: when we brand or label people, they take on the characteristics of the diagnosis. In psychological circles, this mirroring of expectations is known as the Pygmalion effect (describing how we take on positive traits assigned to us by someone else) and the Golem effect (describing how we take on negative traits). But let's used 'chameleon effect' as our catchall term.
-032- p103: [Men were told they were going to be speaking on the phone with certain women. They were shown photos of average and beautiful women. These photos were not of the actual women on the phone. The women were unaware of the photos.]
When the ‘beautiful’ women spoke with their mysterious strangers, they couldn’t help but react to the cues the men were sending. Without realizing it, they took on the characteristics that the men had expected them to have. … The women unconsciously picked up on the ‘beautiful’ opinion the men had of them and acted accordingly. In other words, being thought of as beautiful made the women actually think of themselves as beautiful and exhibit ‘beauty’ in their conversations.
-033- p104: But does the chameleon effect simply change our self-perception temporarily, or can it actually have long-term effects? New research from Yale indicates that diagnosis can indeed thave a lasting effect on our health.
-034- p105: Time had taken its toll, and, unsurprisingly, the average hearing score went down. But not all participants’ hearing had deteriorated equally. Far worse off were those individuals who three years earlier had relied mostly on negative and external descriptors to describe old age. Even after statistically isolating the other factors that would diminish hearing (age, medical condition, etc), the researchers found these external and negative perceptions of aging were responsible, on average, for a whopping 0.7 point drop in a person’s hearing test score—the equivalent of the effect of eight years of normal aging alone—in just three years. In order to make sure that the senior citizens’ self-diagnoses had affected hearing, and not the other way around, the researchers looked at those participants who had received a perfect score on the first hearing test. They found that among individuals who expressed negative and external stereotypes of old age, even those who had had perfect hearing scores the first time around were just as likely to experience diminished hearing at those who had started out with poor hearing.
Negative and external feelings about old age, in other words, can actually make people physically age faster. And the effect is not limited to hearing alone. Similar studies have found that negative stereotypes about aging contribute to memory loss and cardiovascular weakness, and even reduce overall life expectancy by an average of 7.5 years.
-035- p118: When it comes to fairness, it’s the process, not the outcome, that causes us to react irrationally. This is called procedural justice. We don’t expect a computer to be fair—but we do expect people to be.
-036- pp118: But even the most calculating professionals are swayed by fairness. When you think of car dealers, you certainly wouldn’t associate them with the notion of fairness. But despite their reputation for oily salesmanship and bilking consumers, in fact they’re often the ones being taken to the cleaners—by auto manufacturers. Most car dealerships are relatively small operations and have little pricing power compared to the auto manufacturers. If you’re a Ford dealer, for example, then Ford Motor Company is your only supplier; they control pricing and can dictate what your inventory will be. The dealers regularly pay high prices and get stuck with poor inventory—models that are difficult to sell but that the manufacturer needs to move.

-01- Beliefs come from a variety of sources that include the individual’s experiences, the influence of authority, and the interpretation of events.
-02- But beliefs … often serve to make the person feel better by… providing satisfactory explanations for events that are not well understood.
-03- An inability to find causes for important events and situations leads to mental discomfort, even anxiety, so there is a strong tendency to make up a causal story to provide an explanation. Ignorance about important causes is intolerable.
-04- p3: Believing passionately in the palpably not true…is the chief occupation of mankind. –H.L. Mencken
-05- p3: There is a strong motive for explaining any phenomena that affect us in casual terms, an ingrained need to organise the world cognitively—both the external world and the internal world of the individual. Many interviewers of people applying for jobs or places at a university feel confident in their ability to predict long-term performance.
One of the interviewer’s chief errors is the attribution of the person’s behaviour to their inner disposition, their basic character, and the failure to take into account how they will behave in different situations. This is typical of how we judge the causes of other people’s behaviour. There is a well-established tendency to account for our own behaviour in a rather different way from that which we use to explain the behaviour of other people. We believe our own behaviour to be heavily influences by external causes and situations. By contrast, the behaviour of others is much more often believed to be the result of the product of their underlying personal traits and dispositions.

An interesting example of different cultural beliefs is provided by the analysis of two accounts of why two murders took place, one in the New York Times, the other in a Chinese language newspaper, the World Journal. The Times report attributed a major cause to the personal disposition of the murderer, namely that we has mentally unbalanced, while the Chinese paper emphasised the social situation, the selfishness and violence of American society. Such differences are much smaller in relation to beliefs in the physical domain, such as the movement of objects.
-059- p94: Particularly difficult is the origin of a fundamental belief in the theory of mind; that is, being able to have beliefs about the beliefs of other people, and thus how they will act. Individuals who are autistic do not have this ability.

It is probably closer to the way we normally think that we may like to believe. Confabulation is the phenomenon, whereby patients may produce false memories. It is much more common when the patient’s memory is very obviously poor. For example, an elderly woman, who can neither walk nor use her left hand, will say she can do both. When asked to clap her hands, she will make the movement with her right hand and say that she is indeed clapping. This is similar to confabulation and is typical.
-065- pp100-1: Patients may recover from the brain damage and then stop denying they are paralysed. When questioned as to why they had a false belief, some deny that they had such a belief, whereas others may say that their mind knew it to be false, but would not accept it.
-066- p101: The Capgras delusion is another example of a neurological condition giving rise to false beliefs. When the patient sees someone he knows very well, a wife or parent, or child, he claims that the person looks like, for example, his spouse, but she is not really his wife and may be an alien impostor. In other respects the patient may be largely normal. One explanation is that in seeing his wife, he recognises her, but that the normal emotional response is absent and thus it could not be his wife.
-067- p101: A related but different disorder is prostopagnosia, in which the patient cannot recognise the identity of faces. Yet physiological studies show that the patient does respond to a familiar face, even though he or she fails to recognise the face as someone well known to them. The Fregoli delusion is one in which patients keep seeing someone close to them, possibly a family member, who follows them around but is unrecognisable because they are in disguise.
-068- pp101-2: There are symptoms of delusions in the general population, even in individuals who appear to be perfectly normal. Several studies have found that 10-15 per cent of the population have hallucinatory experiences in their lives, and 20 per cent reported delusions. A study of delusions in the general population made use of a delusion inventory. Questions in the delusions inventory included asking whether the subject has the feeling that they can read other people’s minds, that other people can read theirs, that someone is aiming to harm them, that these is some mysterious power working for the good of the world, and that they are not in control of their own actions. For each of the forty questions, the subject was asked to indicate the strength of the associated belief. The range of scores overlapped considerably between normal and clinically deluded subjects. About 10 per cent of the normal group had scores above the average of the deluded group. The boundary between those with normal and those with abnormal belief is fuzzy. All these studies imply that humans have a natural tendency to somewhat mystical explanations, which are normally constrained, but can emerge under certain circumstances.
-069- p102: In judging a task involving simple probability judgement, subjects who scored higher on the delusion inventory showed what is known as the jump-to-response. This refers to reaching conclusions on minimal evidence. They also showed a need for closure, that it, the determination to give an answer rather than remain uncertain or experience ambiguity.

These are a feeling of blessedness and peace; a sense of the holy, sacred or divine; and a sense of the paradox of life,together with a sense of the ineffable. Mystical experiences are, for the individual, very real, as real as those of people who suffer from mental illness and have false beliefs. Moreover, evidence that human brains are prone to hallucinations, similar to those experienced in schizophrenia, comes from studies which found that about 40 per cent of American college students reported having heard their thoughts spoken out loud, and 5 per cent had actually held conversations with those voices. Only about 30 per cent had no experience at all of hallucinations.
-071- pp106-7: Severe depression provides a further example of pathological false beliefs, and can provide a nice example of how it is related to a normal function: the emotion sadness. The psychoanalyst Aaron Beck realised that it was her conscious thoughts of his depressed patients that really mattered. Instead of the psychoanalytical assumption that it is the unconscious thoughts that maintain the depression. Beck recognised the fundamental importance of automatic negative thinking by his patients. All their beliefs are negative and may have little relation to reality. Negative thoughts can permeate a patient’s mind and can result in false beliefs. These negative core beliefs are usually global, over-general, and absolute—there is no doubt.
Depression, too, has a strong genetic basis. Many episodes of depression are triggered by loss, which results in sadness, a normal emotion that leads to attempts to make up the loss. Depression can be viewed as sadness becoming excessive, even malignant, and so giving rise to false beliefs. The cognitive processes in the brain interpret the emotion in this false manner and feed back to make the individual even sadder, and too often this can lead to suicide.
In the inner world of the depressive, the self is perceived to be ineffective and inadequate, whereas the outside world is seen as presenting insuperable obstacles; moreover, there is the belief that the depression will continue forever, and that the patient will never get better. The sufferers draw negative conclusions without any evidence to support them – ‘I failed once, and this means I will never be successful’; and reach important conclusions on the basis of a single event–’John says he does not love me, nobody cares for me.’ Underlying there negative thoughts are a set of false beliefs, and it is the aim of cognitive therapy for depression to uncover and correct these beliefs.

People wanted to know what caused the important events in their lives, what would happen in the future, and what action they should take. Uncertainty about major issues that affected their lives was an intolerable then as it is now. There were feelings of fear, of illness and other dangers like starvation, that had to be overcome.

How do our beliefs help or hinder in this plausible scenario? Religion can help, because it promotes optimism and hope. It provides believes with a sense of purpose and meaning in life, but can also give rise to negative effects such as guilt.

-080- p119: There are so many religions and the differences in detail with regard to their beliefs are so great that they can contradict each other,. In this sense most must have beliefs that are wrong, though there will be many who will argue for the validity of one religion compared to all the others. Pascal Boyer, an anthropologist, recounts a nice story about telling the other diners at a Cambridge college dinner how the Fang people believe in witches who have an internal organ that can fly at night and destroy crops. There were even claims of some of the Fang having seen them in flight. To this, a prominent Catholic theologian said that he wondered how it could be possible to explain such nonsensical beliefs. But as Boyer know, the Fang were themselves totally puzzled by Christianity, particularly in the Trinity, three people in one, and by the belief that all misfortunes were due to two ancestors eating some exotic fruit.

And since causal beliefs that promote survival, particularly those that relate to mystical forces, and even perhaps to the gods themselves? In addition, religion beliefs provided gods or ancestors who could be prayed to, and who might help to solve problems. Again, those with such beliefs may have been better adapted for survival if they were less anxious and healthier.

Prayer is very important because the individual believe that he or she really can influence what will happen; some people believe they are empowered to communicate directly with the source of all control and change. Most religions teach that suffering is to be expected and could even be a valuable experience. Meaning is essential: if the meaning of suffering is clear, it is easier to bear. Death needs an explanation, and religion can provide it. We go to heaven or hell, our shadows persist, we become ancestors. Most religious explanations are comforting, but not all.
-089- pp124-5: All societies have beliefs about the origin of the world and what happens after death. Religion has declined a little in the West, but is still a powerful force in both the West and the East. An ICM poll in 2004 found that 85 per cent of Americans believe that God created the universe, while in Britain only 46 per cent believe in God. In Nigeria, 98 per cent claimed always to have believed I God, while nine out of ten Indonesians said they would die for their God or religious beliefs. A survey by the market research bureau of Ireland found 87 per cent of the population believe in God. Rather than rocking their faith, 19 per cent said tragedies such as the Asian tsunami, which killed 3oo,ooo people, bolstered their belief. In a 1996 Gallup poll in the USA, 90 per cent believe in heaven, 79 per cent in miracles and 72 per cent in angels. According to a 1991 Gallup poll, also in the USA, over one half believe in the devil. During the last thirty years, membership of the Mormon church has more than doubled to around 5 million, and that of the Southern Baptists has increased from around 8 to 16 million.
In 2001 just over three quarters of the UK population reported having a religion. More than seven out of ten people said that their religion was Christian (72 per cent). After Christianity, Islam was the most common faith, with nearly 3 per cent describing their religion as Muslim (1.6 million). Religion in the UK has declined in the 20th century as measured by church membership. Only the Catholic Church showed an increase. In 1998 about half of the people of Britain believed in God, but even occasional church attendance was down to about 25 per cent.

-094- pp130-1Michael Shermer conducted a survey of the Sceptics Society in the USA, which has many members who are scientists, and found, to his surprise, that while they were indeed sceptical of the paranormal, over one third thought it likely God existed. He then tried to find out the basis for this belief, not only among them, but more generally. The answers he received were of two main kinds: first, that there appears to be a pattern of God’s presence in the world, and secondly, that belief brings comfort and alleviates fear of death. The latter reason was the main explanation for those questioned not about their own beliefs, but about why they thought other people believed in God. For those who did not believe in God, some 40 per cent said that it was because there was no proof of God’s existence. Other reasons were that such a belief was absurd and unnecessary. It is striking how little a role science plays in such explanations, and though there was some correlation between disbelief and interest in science, this may merely reflect higher education qualifications. The more educated, the less religious belief. Conservatives were more religious than liberal. And people who scored highly in openness were less religious. Men tried to justify their belief with reasons, women with emotions.
Not to have a religious belief is relatively modern. Unbelief is most likely a product of Greek thought. In his Laws, Plato argues for religious beliefs: the existence of God, and the immortality of the soul. Not to believe in these he regards as a serious crime worthy of prison, even death. For him, it is not a matter of acceptance but faith, trust and obedience.
-095- pp131-2: Religious belief is partly the relation of self to the rest of the world in some mystical manner, rather than to just objective reality. Three centuries ago, the radical English philosopher Thomas Hobbes, in his Leviathan dismissed all religion as ‘credulity’, ‘ignorance’ and ‘lies’, and said that God existed only in the minds of the believers. He wrote:
For if a man pretend to me that God hath spoken to him supernaturally and immediately I make doubt of it. I cannot easily perceive what argument he can produce to oblige me to believe it. It is true that, if he be my Sovereign he may oblige me to obedience, so as not by act or word to declare I believe him not; but not to think otherwise than my reason persuades me…For to say that God hath spoken to him…in a dream, is no more than to say he dreamed God spoke to him…
Voltaire was surprised by the presence of widespread atheism in England in 1730 and David Hume wrote him famous essay on miracles in 1748. ‘There is not to be found in all history any miracle attested by a sufficient number of men, of such unquestioned good sense, education and learning, as to secure us against all delusion in themselves… It is strange that such prodigious events never happen in our days.’ Other attacks on religious beliefs came earlier from the French historian of mathematics and science de Fontenelle in 1687, and as early as 1711 the Earl of Shaftesbury was putting forward a scientific study of religion, which he discussed in terms of anxiety and illusion. Such an approach is at the start of a now long tradition of attributing religion to groundless fears and irrationality. Yet at those times in Europe, insanity was believe to be either due to the devil, or a punishment by God.
Sigmund Freud described religious beliefs as ‘illusion’ and ‘childishness to be overcome’. He developed a psychanalytic theory of religion based on the Oedipus complex: the desire of the son to sexually possess the mother and exclude the father. His explanation, that it had its origin in the killing of a dominant father who bounded females, and in the subsequent guilt of the murdering sons, cannot be taken seriously. He later developed his theory as follows:
Religion would thus be the universal obsessional neurosis of humanity; like the obsessional neurosis of children, it arose out of the Oedipus complex, out of the relation to the father…religion beings with it obsessional restrictions, exactly as an individual obsessional neurosis does; on the other hand it comprises a system of wishful illusions together with a disavowal of reality, such as we find nowhere else but…in a state of blissful hallucinatry confusion.
–a description that in some ways could be applied to psychoanalysis itself.
-096- p136: Although the studies should be regarded as tentative, the evidence is that there is an inverse relationship between pain intensity, and religious beliefs. This is consistent with the findings that those within a religious community enjoy better mental health, possibly due to social support. There is also evidence that religious activities reduce psychological stress and promote greater well-being and optimism, and so help to reduce the bodily effects of stress such as that on the heart. Religious beliefs are complex; social religiosity, for example, is associated with a reduced risk of psychiatric illness and drug taking, while other beliefs such as God as judge and general religiosity are only associated with less risk of drug abuse.
-097- pp136-7: The Minnesota twin study did find that there was a genetic influence on whether an individual developed religious belief. The heritability was around 50 per cent, which implies a significant genetic component.

Those was such beliefs most likely did better, and so were selected for. If prayers for a sick child fail and the child dies, an explanation might be that the individual who prayed had committed some unforgivable sin.
-107- p146: Where a local world was in flux, attacks on witches could thus provide an outlet for frustration, a means to secure access to material and scarce resources, or to redress unwelcome shifts in the balance of power. Beliefs in witchcraft were therefore exploited for a scapegoating process that involved a trajectory of violence against defenceless individuals. There was no common model, although there were often strong points of similarity between outbreaks. Often the victims were marginalised from their communities; for example, old women without kin, or herd boys geographically isolated from the village. There was frequently a pronounced gender or generational character, with the female and the old being common targets. Some of those targeted were, however, the conspicuously prosperous, as with black traders, whose success had aroused aggressive jealousy, and who were seen as trading core traditional values for economic success. A survey in southern Africa found that four fifths of those accused of witchcraft were related to their victims—most frequently a wife or mother-in-law was accused.

A major factor is a traumatic event in childhood, such as extreme loneliness or physical abuse. Fantasy could be an escape from severe stress. It could also provide a belief that there is a world over which children have control. Indeed, control may be a key in relation to paranormal beliefs. Paranormal beliefs can provide a cognitive framework within which life events are comprehensible and therefore may be mastered. Personal experience of any paranormal phenomena provides a very strong basis for believing in them. But there also seems to be a powerful urge to believe in such phenomena, and this, as I have suggested in relation to false beliefs, may be programmed in our brains. Belief in paranormal phenomena is very difficult to change.
-111- p150: A survey in the UK found that people with strong paranormal beliefs had a high level of religious interest, but were not integrated into religious institutions or events. They were seeking transcendence, but were compensating with their beliefs for not being in an organised religion. A survey in Reading found that those who believed in the paranormal based this on personal experience. Examples included dreams that came true, seeing a dead relative, and thinking of someone dying who was in fact dying. About 70 per cent believed in the paranormal. Their belief often came from friends and the media.

-113- pp151-2: In 1997, the self-proclaimed Vedic philosopher Leahcim Remrehs offered psychic wisdom over a radio station to Chicago listeners. He told how scientific thinking, compared to New Age Enlightenment, restricted one’s ability to perceive other dimensions, the future and the past. He invited callers to just give their date of birth and then ask a single question—this would allow him to tap into their cosmic vibrations. His success in telling the callers things about themselves, and their relationships was very impressive and persuasive. But this psychic was really Michael Shermer (backwards) using his psychological skills.
This is a nice example of the Barnum effect. If you make some general statement, people will take it as referring accurately to something specifically about the,. It is a technique used by clever mediums who not only claim to be able to contact the dead, but tell a person something important about their lives on first meeting. The extent to which the medium is self-deceiving is interested. The so-called psychic works from the general; for example, ‘I sense a tension in your relationship,’ or ‘You are wearing something very important to you.’ As Shermer points out, around half of all Americans believe in astrology.
-114- p153: An important feature for those who observe a psychic is the frame of mind in which they come to the event. Sceptics come believing they will be exposed to some sort of trickery, whereas believers in psychic powers expect a genuine display, and that they might even make contact with another world. These expectations do affect the observer’s experience. Their later recall of what happened, and whether there really has been a demonstration of extrasensory perception, is greatly influenced by their beliefs—the believers recall psychic phenomena even when the demonstration has been unsuccessful and nothing actually moved, as just described.
Many individuals have reported experiencing extraordinary phenomena during darkroom seances. Eyewitness claim that objects have mysteriously moved, strange sounds have been produced or ghostly forms have appeared, and that these phenomena have occurred under conditions that render normal explanations practically impossible. Believers in the paranormal argue that the conditions commonly associated with a séance, such as darkness, anticipation and fear, may act as a catalyst to produce these phenomena.
-115- pp155-7: An experimental method for studying ESP is the Ganzfield procedure, which tests for telepathic communication between a sender and a receiver. The receiver is placed in a reclining chair in a soundproofed room with translucent half ping-pong calls placed over the eyes, and headphones over the ears. A red floodlight is directed at the eyes and white noise played through the headphones. All this creates a total homogenous field—the Ganzfield. The sender is placed in another isolated room and is randomly presented with a picture, photograph or videotape. The receiver provides a verbal report of the images he or she has perceived. Then the receiver is presented with several, say four, images and is asked which matches the images they received. Of the four images only one was ‘sent’ by the sender, so the chance of being correct, by chance alone, is one in four. There was in 1994 a report in a respected science journal, the Psychological Bulletin, that the receiver did slightly better than this, and claimed to show a paranormal transfer, but those who have examined the report closely have concluded that the necessary evidence is flawed.
There are also claims for psychokinetic phenomena where the mind alone, just thoughts, can affect the behaviour of objects both nearby and very far away. Science has no evidence whatsoever that the implied forces could exist. Such phenomena, it is claimed, could act to heal, bring rain, or raise a table. Poltergeists, non-human agents, must be assumed to use similar methods. The stories are legion, yet those with such powers have been very constrained in what they might have done—changed lead into gold, prevented ageing, and so on. And once again, why are such extraordinary powers so rarely used? Science provides no evidence whatsoever that the implied forces could exist.
Many psychics claim to be able to help the police solve serious crime. Psychics have been used in over one third of the USA urban police departments and they have also been used in Europe. Wiseman and his colleagues compared the performance of two groups, one of psychic detectives, and the other a group of college students who were the control group. One of the psychic detectives was taken quite seriously by his local police force. Each group was shown three items that had been involved in one of three crimes: a bullet, a scarf and a shoe. The three crimes were, briefly: a soldier shot his wife and buried her, and she was identified by her shoe years later; a police officer was shot and the two men responsible were convicted on evidence that included the bullet; and an elderly lady was strangled by her scarf. All the subjects were asked to handle all three objects, and then filled in a questionnaire relating to the items, in which they had to say whether the statements about the crimes were true or false. None of the scores was statistically significantly different from random. However, the psychics, when told of the crimes involved, believed that they had in fact been successful—they had got some things right, like the scarf being involved in suffocation. But they ignored their false predictions.
Miraculous events are reported in many places, particularly in religious texts. The evidence, to put it mildly, is rarely convincing, and usually relies on personal testimony. An interesting example of the reliability of this personal testimony is provided by what Wiseman refers to as the best-known secular miracle: the Indian rope trick. Accounts of this can be found in Buddhist and Hindu literature, and there is eyewitness testimony from the fourteenth century onwards. In the standard accounts, a magician in a field or market square throws up a rope, which remains rigid. A boy then climbs up the rope and vanishes. The magician calls the boy back, and when he does not appear, he himself climbs the rope and vanishes. Next, the boy’s body, dismembered, falls to the ground, and the magician returns and restores the boy to normal health. Many individuals claim to have witnessed the trick, or at least some portion of it. Why do they believe they have seen such a ‘miraculous’ event? Wiseman surmised that whatever the reason, the reports would have become increasingly exaggerated over time from the reports of those who actually claimed to have seen it. And this is what he found: the average time that had passed since anyone reported seeing the boy climbing and disappearing was thirty years. There seems to be a real need for some to believe in such events.
-116- p158: A series in the UK, James Randi: Psychic Investigator, aimed to debunk psychic phenomena. A survey of attitudes, both before and after seeing the programme, found that about half believed that there was enough evidence to have serious discussion on the topic, and one quarter believed that ghosts were not imaginary. About one quarter believed in a supreme being with whom humans were not in contact. And about one third had had some sort of paranormal experience such as a premonition. The Randi programmes had virtually no effect on changing people’s beliefs, but some TV critics condemned them as hypocritical and tasteless for even questioning the paranormal.
-117- p159: With its promotion by the media, belief in the paranormal seems to be comforting to some, but is acutely irritating to others like myself. It suggests that there is a greater reality that we do not yet understand, and may never do. It opens up the possibility of life after death. It also opens up the possibility that we all have powers that we can develop to help us control our own bodies, and even the behaviour of other people and objects around us. But would people believe in ESP if it did not resonate with their own experiences, particularly coincidences? Recall that with just twenty three people in a room, the chances of two having the same birthday are fifty-fifty.

Bloodletting was believed in by doctors from Galen’s times, and it was the subject of one of the first clinical trials, by Pierre Louis in Paris in the early nineteenth century. He found how ineffective it was. Patients had been unnecessarily bled, with serious ill effects, for nearly 2,ooo years.
-121- p172: Charcot, the nineteenth-century French neurologist, used hypnosis to uncover hysteria, but failed to realise that the behaviours he observed were most likely due to the suggestions he made to his patients. Freud was much influenced by these explanations.
William Gladstone thought that everyone would be much healthier if they chewed each bite of food precisely thirty-two times—there are, after all, thirty-two teeth. And George Washington believed that a variety of illnesses could be cured by passing two three-inch metal rods over the afflicted area. Even today, there is enormous enthusiasm for remedies that claim to sure cancer and other serious illnesses, but for which these is just no reliable evidence.
Values can influence the definition of health and disease, as is illustrated by views on mental illness in America in the nineteenth century. Some physicians asserted with all their authority that women who enjoyed sexual intercourse, or who indulged in masturbation, were afflicted with various forms of mental illness as well as physical problems. There were also diseases that affected only blacks; one disorder was even named ‘drapetomania’, the overwhelming desire of a slave to run away.
-122- pp173-4: Studies of patients have found that around 50 per cent (it varies in studies from 30 per cent to 80 per cent) of visits to the doctor for physical symptoms that have no organic basis could be due to somatisation—the mind affecting bodily functions, often as a result of depression. This strong relationship between psychological stress and somatic symptoms suggests that religious beliefs could actually make things better by reducing stress. Religious beliefs and behaviours are inversely related to several of the risk factors for heart diseases. Lower blood pressure, for example, has a positive association with religious belief. The death rate from heart disease among Mormons is about 30 per cent lower than the general American rate. There are also studies showing that mental illness is lower in religious groups. [PN: The instance of heart disease in Mormons could be down to the fact that Mormons consume neither alcohol nor caffeine.]

For example, 80 per cent of hospital patients given sugar as an emetic vomited, and asthmatics have had an attack caused by neutral inhalant which they were told would cause one, and cured by the same inhalant when told that it would help them. Medical students’ disease is well known: many students begin to get the symptoms of the disease they are studying. It is also the case that depressed patients have a greater probability of heart disease because, perhaps, of their negative expectations with respect to their health. The most dramatic example if voodoo death, which has been reported in diverse cultures in Africa, South America and Australia. Its success depends upon the victim knowing the spell or ritual curse has been cast. Somatisation, how the beliefs held can affect the body, could be a related phenomenon.

To maintain cooperation, it is essential that most members believe that almost all of the other members are cooperative. This belief will be supported if there are known to be punishments for selfish individuals. There is also evidence that a considerable part of human altruism is driven by beliefs concerning what effect it will have on reputation.

-138- p199: From the moment that the egg has been fertilised by the sperm, the status of the early embryo is that of a human being according to most Christian religions, and this is particularly clearly stated by the Catholic Church.
-139- pp199-200: There is, in fact, nobiological basis for such beliefs, if only because the fertilised egg can develop into more than one person, namely, it can give rise to twins. I would argue that the embryo is only a person when the baby can survive outside the womb with minimal technical support. The divine basis for these religious convictions is far from clear, as it is of relatively recent origin. It prefers quick decisions, it is bad with numbers, loves representativeness, and sees patterns where often these is only randomness. It is too often influenced by authority, and it has a liking for mysticism.

Baloney Detection: How to draw boundaries between science and pseudoscience by Michael Shermer
1. How reliable is the source of the claim? : Do the data and interpretations show signs of intentional distortion? When an independent committee established to investigate potential fraud scrutinized a set of research notes in Nobel laureate David Baltimore’s laboratory, it revealed a surprising number of mistakes. Baltimore was exonerated because his lab’s mistakes were random and nondirectional.
2. Does this source often make similar claims? Pseudoscientists have a habit of going well beyond the facts. Watch out for a pattern of fringe thinking that consistently ignores or distorts data.
3. Have the claims been verified by another source? Typically pseudoscientists make statements that are unverified or verified only by a source within their own belief circle. We must ask, Who is checking the claims, and even who is checking the checkers.
4. How does the claim fit with what we know about how the world works? When people claim that the Egyptian pyramids and the Sphinx were built more than 10,ooo years ago by an unknown, advanced race, they are not presenting any context for that earlier civilisation. Where are the rest of the artifacts of those people? Where are their works of art, their weapons, their clothing, their tools, their trash?
5. Has anyone gone out of the way to disprove the claim, or has only supportive evidence been sought? This is the confirmation bias, or the tendency to seek confirmatory evidence and to reject or ignore disconfirmatory evidence.
6. Does the preponderance of evidence point to the claimant’s conclusion or to a different one? The theory of evolution, for example, is ‘proved’ through a convergence of evidence from a number of independent lines of inquiry. Creationists conveniently ignore this confluence, focusing instead on trivial anomalies or currently unexplained phenomena in the history of life.
7. Is the claimant employing the accepted rules of reason and tools or research, or have these been abandoned in favour of others that lead to the desired conclusion?
8. Is the claimant providing an explanation for the observed phenomena or merely denying the existing explanation? This is a classic debate strategy—criticise your opponent and never affirm what you believe to avoid criticism. It is next to impossible to get creationists to offer an explanation for life (other than ‘God did it’.)
9. If the claimant proffers a new explanation, does it account for as many phenomena as the old explanation did? Many HIV/AIDs skeptics argue that lifestyle causes AIDs. Yet their alternative theory doesn’t explain nearly as much of the data as the HIV theory does.
10. Do the claimant’s personal beliefs and biases drive the conclusions or vice versa? All scientists hold social, political and ideological beliefs that could potentially slant their interpretations of the data, but how do those biases and beliefs affect their research in practise? Usually during the peer-review system, such biases ad beliefs are rooted out, or the paper or book is rejected.

How to Detect Fallacious Arguments (From Why People Believe Weird Things by Michael Shermer)
Reductio ad Absurdum: A reduction to absurdity; the disproof of a proposition by showing its consequences to be impossible or absurd when carried to a logical conclusion. Similar to Slippery Slope.
Theory Influences Observations: Heisenberg ‘What we observe is not nature itself but nature exposed to our method of questioning. The theory in part constructs the reality. Reality exists independent of the observer, of course, but our perceptions of reality are influenced by the theories framing our examination of it. Thus, philosophers call science ‘theory-laden’.
The Observer Changes the Observed: The act of studying an event changes it. (Social sciences and tribes.) Science tries to minimize and acknowledge the effects of the observation on the behaviour of the observed; pseudoscience does not.
Equipment Constructs Results: The equipment used in an experiment often determines the results. The size of our telescopes, for example, has shaped and reshaped our theories about the size of the universe. What my telescope can’t see isn’t there, and what my test can’t measure isn’t intelligence.
Anecdotes Do Not Make A Science: Anecdotes are told by fallible human storytellers…we need physical evidence of an alien spacecraft…
Scientific Language Does Not Make a Science: Dressing up a belief system in the trappings of science by using scientific language and jargon, as in ‘creation-science,’ means nothing without evidence experimental testing and corroboration.
Bold Statements Do Not Make Claims True: Something is probably pseudoscientific if enormous claims are made for its power and veracity but supportive evidence is scarce as hen’s teeth… the more extraordinarily well-tested the evidence must be.
Heresy Does Not Equal Correctness: They laugh at Copernicus. They laughed at the Wright brothers. Yes, well, they laughed at the Marx brothers. Schopenhauer, ‘All truth passes through three stages: First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as self-evident.’ But, ‘all truth’ does not pass through these stages. Lots of time ideas are accepted without ridicule or opposition violent or otherwise. Einstein’s theory of relativity was largely ignored until 1919, when experimental evidence proved him right.
Burden of Proof: The person making the extraordinary claim has the burden of proving to the experts and to the community at large that his or her belief has more validity than the one almost everyone else accepts.
Rumours Do Not Equal Reality: ‘I read somewhere that…’ or ‘I heard from someone that…’ passes into, ‘I know that.’
The Unexplained is Not Inexplicable: Many people are overconfident enough to think that if they cannot explain something, it must be inexplicable and therefore a true mystery of the paranormal… Even those who are more reasonable at least think that if the experts cannot explain something, it must be inexplicable… it is okay to say, ‘We do not yet know but someday perhaps we will.’ The problem is that most of us find it more comforting to have certainty, even if it is premature, than to live with unsolved or unexplained mysteries.
Failures Are Rationalized: In science, the value of negative findings—failures–cannot be overemphasized…failures are how we get closer to the truth. [Pseudoscienists] ignore or rationalize failures.
Post hoc, ergo procter hoc: After this, therefore because of this. Correlation does not mean causation.
Coincidence: When the connection is made in a manner that seems impossible according to our intuition of the laws of probability, we have a tendency to think something mysterious is at work. As the behavioural psychologist B.F. Skinner proved in his laboratory, the human mind seeks relationships between events and often finds them even when they are not present.
Representativeness: Aristotle: The sum of the coincidences equals certainty.’ We forget most of the insignificant coincidences and remember the meaningful ones. … [We] remember hits and ignore misses.
Emotive Words and False Analogies: Emotive words are used to provoke emotion and sometimes to obscure rationality. Likewise, metaphors and analogies can cloud thinking with emotion or steer us onto a side path.
Ad Ignorantiam: This is an appeal to ignorance or lack of knowledge and is related to the burden of proof and unexplained is not inexplicable fallacies, where someone argues that if you cannot disprove a claim it must be true.
Ad Hominem and Tu Quoque: …these fallacies redirect the focus from thinking about the idea to thinking about the person holding the idea. Calling someone an atheist, a communist, a child abuser, or a Neo-Nazi does not in any way disprove that person’s statement. …Similarly, for tu quoque. If someone accuses you of cheating on your taxes, the answer, ‘Well, so do you,’ is no [???] way or the other.
Hasty Generalization: In logic, the hasty generalization is a form of improper induction. In [???] it is called prejudice… Conclusions are drawn before the facts warrant it. …this fallacy is one of the most common of all. A handful of members of a group are used to judge the entire group.
Overreliance on Authorities: We tend to rely heavily on authorities in our culture, especially if the authority is considered to be highly intelligent. The IQ score has acquire nearly mystical proportions in the last half century, but I have noticed that belief in the paranormal is not uncommon among MENSA members; some even argue that their ‘Psi-Q’ is also superior.
Either-Or: Fallacy of negation or the false dilemma, this is the tendency to dichotomize the world so that if you discredit one position, the observer is forced to accept the other. A new theory needs evidence in favour of it, not just against the opposition.
Circular Reasoning: Fallacy or redundancy, begging the question or tautology, this occures when the conclusion or claim is merely a restatement of one of the premises. ‘Is there a God? Yes. How do you know? Because the Bible says so. How do you know the Bible is correct? Because it was inspired by God.’ Science also has its share of redundancies: What is gravity? The tendency for objects to be attracted to one another, [???] are objects attracted to one another? Gravity.’
Effort Inadequacies and the Need for Certainty, Control and Simplicity: Most of us most of the time, want certainty, and want nice, near, simple explanations., Alfred Mander in Logic for the Millions: ‘People with untrained minds should no more expect to think clearly and logically than people who have never learned and never practised can expect to find themselves good carpenters, golfers, bridge players or pianists.’ We [???] always work to suppress our need to be absolutely certain and in total control and our tendency to seek the simple and effortless solution to a problem.
Problem-Solving Inadequacies: Psychologist Barry Singer has demonstrated that when people are given the task of selecting the right answer to a problem after being told whether particular guesses are right or wrong, they: a) Immediately form a hypothesis and look only for examples to confirm it. B) Do not seek evidence to dispose the hypothesis. C) Are very slow to change the hypothesis even when it is obviously wrong. D) If the information is too complex, adopt an overly-simple hypothesis or strategies for solutions. E) If there is no solution, if the problem is a trick and ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ is given at random, form hypothesis about [???] relationships they observed. Causality is always found.
Ideological Immunity, or the Planck Problem: In day-to-day life, as in science, we all resist fundamental paradigm change… the more knowledge individuals have accumulated , and the more well- [???] the theories have become (and remember, we all tend to look for and remember confirmatory evidence, not [???] evidence), the greater the confidence in their idealogies. The consequences of this, however, is that we build up ‘immunity’ against new ideas that do not corroborate previous ones. Historians of science call this the Planck Problem, after physicist Max Planck, who made this observation on what must happen for innovation to [???] science: ‘An unrepentant scientific innovation rarely makes its way by gradually winning over and converting its opponents: What does happen is that its opponents gradually die out and that the growing generation is familiarized with the idea from the beginning.’ Psychologist David [Perkies] conducted an interesting correlational study in which he found a strong positive correlation between intelligence (measured by a standard IQ test) and the ability to give reasona for taking a point of view and defending that position he also found a strong negative correlation between intelligence and the ability to consider other alternatives.

Spinoza’s Dictum: Skeptics have the very human tendency to relish debunking what we already believe to be nonsense. It is for this reason that it is so important for us to understand the history of both science and pseudoscience. If we see the larger picture of how these movements evolve and [???] and how their thinking went wrong, we won’t make the same mistakes. Spinoza: I have made a ceaseless effort not to ridicule, not to bewail, not to scorn human actions but to understand them.

William of Occam: No more things should be presumed to exist than are absolutely necessary.

Adam Smith: Science is the great antidote to the poison of enthusiasm and superstition.
…Still, without Brouwer’s suggestion I would never have gotten myself to engage intensively with your book because it is written in a language inaccessible to me. The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weakness, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still purely primitive, legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this. … For me the Jewish religion like all other religions is an incarnation of the most childish superstition. And the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong … have no different quality for me than all other people. As far as my experience goes, they are also no better than other human groups, although they are protected from the worst cancers by a lack of power. Otherwise I cannot see anything “chosen” about them….”

In January of 1954, just a year before his death, Albert Einstein wrote the following letter to philosopher Erik Gutkind after reading his book, ‘ Choose Life: The Biblical Call to Revolt ‘. Apparently Einstein had only read the book due to repeated recommendation by their mutual friend Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer .

Einstein penned the letter on January 3 1954 to the philosopher Eric Gutkind who had sent him a copy of his book Choose Life: The Biblical Call to Revolt. The letter went on public sale a year later and has remained in private hands ever since.

In the letter, he states: “The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this.”

Einstein, who was Jewish and who declined an offer to be the state of Israel’s second president, also rejected the idea that the Jews are God’s favoured people.

And the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong and with whose mentality I have a deep affinity have no different quality for me than all other people. Finding Darwins God by Kenneth Miller

Finding Darwin’s God by Kenneth R. Miller does an excellent job of showing the people with a fish on their cars that they can have their god and science, too. That’s the first half of the book–-pointing out the flaws in the various Creationist arguments. The second half is supposed to be aimed at nonbelievers, I think, but his arguments then fall apart. He does make some excellent points about the main problems in the arguments from atheists, though, which made me examine the reasons for my own beliefs more closely.

One of his points that I found most interesting was that science and religion answer different questions–science offers explanations of how we’re here and religion handles the why. I hadn’t thought about it in that way, but it’s a fair point. (Unfortunately, some religious people would say they were put here to make nonreligious people crazy–as well as the people who don’t follow their own religion.) And I still think any person with half a brain should be able to figure out that life is less stressful if you’re not an asshole. Miller argues that if it were possible to argue the majority of people out of their religion then pandemonium would reign. Now, I want to give people credit for not being stupid but… yeah, he’s probably right. Some people will always need a supernatural boogieman to keep them in line.

My big problem with Creationists was that I couldn’t figure out why they didn’t just say, ‘God created evolution. Isn’t he clever?’ Which is Miller’s premise. He then goes to explain how that could be possible and how the god that did that would be much more interesting than a god who did everything in one day (or seven). One of my favourite bits was when he said that once a woman told him she didn’t believe in evolution because it would have taken too long and Miller thought, “Because god, with all of eternity, was in a rush.”

My other favourite part was when he referenced St Augustine (a 4th theologian) who begged Christians not to stand up in public and make fools of themselves about science because that only made all Christians look stupid. I’m thinking of quoting that bit to the next Bible-thumper who says the Earth is flat or what-have-you.

I was lucky enough to have lunch with Mr Miller after reading his book and I thanked him for at least giving us a way to get along. As much as I admire Richard Dawkins, I don’t think that doing away with religion would do away with all the horrible things on the planet–even without a god on their side jackholes would still be jackholes. There would still be wars over land and money and all those fun things, the only difference would be that the war-makers would have one less thing to use against their enemies. But you can turn a group of strangers into arch-nemeses without invoking their mythologies by simply pointing out all the other ways they’re different from you and yours. Yes, it’d be nice for everyone to be completely rational–I’d like to be more rational about some things–but I’d settle for people just not being jerks. Miller makes a step toward that on at least this one issue.

Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast by Lewis Wolpert
Why do seemingly intelligent, rational people believe in irrational, sometimes downright ludicrous things? Probably because the parts of the mind that appreciate cause and effect–even in places where it’s not there–allowed early humans to survive and adapt. In Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast: The Evolutionary Origins of Belief , Lewis Wolpert attempts to explain the evolutionary principles behind the billions of people today who believe in supernatural things with no scientific corroboration. For example, people who believed in the same god would flock together and would therefore be safer than the atheists who were off on their own just getting on with things.

While Wolpert isn’t the most exciting writer, what he has to say is interesting and makes many good points e.g. the cause and effect of learning how to use early tools is the same thought process that concludes: something made the sky and that something is probably like me so there is a sentient being out there in charge. He also doesn’t go into as much detail as I’d have liked, but the book is a good explanation of why people believe unbelievable things. I give it four stars.

Moses Was a Dirty Hippie

An Israeli researcher says that Moses could have been on hallucinogenic drugs when he had that little convo on Mount Sinai with god, as certain drugs were often used in religious ceremonies back in the day.

That makes more sense than supernatural explanations. It would be like basing your life philosophy on something someone stoned out of their mind said whilst staring at their hands in the corner of a room at a party. ‘Duuuude, if people, could…like…just… be , you know? Like…everything would be cool if dude’s didn’t, like, want other dudes’ stuff…and, like, didn’t bang other dudes’ girls, and shit.’

That’s fitting, really, because in Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast Lewis Wolpert talks about how LSD and similar drugs makes people have religious experiences.

And it’s great that today’s biggest militaristic proponents of rigid order and no fun are worshipping the revelations of a dirty hippie who sat on a mountain and took some peyote.

I suppose we’re lucky that he didn’t come down the mountain and say: I’ve seen God and he’s a big pink elephant!

Ad Hominem Attacks

I like dogs. Hitler liked dogs, too. Therefore I must be as reprehensible as Hitler.

That is an example of an ad hominem attack. Taking an aspect of a person’s personality and using that to denounce everything that person does/professes/thinks/believes. A particularly favourite accusation is, ‘Well, she’s a [Tory, Labour, Republican, Democrat] so you can’t believe anything she says.’ The ad hominem attack is the purview of those who have no legitimate argument against a person for whom they don’t care.

Anton LaVey is often the target of such attacks. No matter what his biography actually was, his philosophies and beliefs are still sound.

Ray Charles was a drug addict. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a womanizer. Gunter Grass was a Hitler Youth, etc, etc. Would you like to have your entire life judged by the least attractive aspect of your personality? Or would you like people to consider your entire contribution to the world?
